The Polar Pioneer

polar pioneer antarctica cruise

The Polar Pioneer is an ideal expedition vessel, perfectly suited to small ship Polar adventures, she was one of the pioneer ships in Antarctica. Originally built as an ice-strengthened research vessel in Finland in 1982, she was refurbished in 2000 and converted into a passenger ship for expeditions to the Polar Regions. Polar Pioneer’s excellent reputation for polar expedition cruising is due to her strength, manoeuvrability and size. She is small and nimble, which means she can sail up close to landing sites and venture where other, larger ships can’t. Carrying just 54 passengers, she allows us to offer you a far more personal and intimate experience of the destination we are visiting.

PHOTOGRAPHERS FIRST LIGHT

Time and light, the photographer’s most treasured attributes, feature in abundance on this inaugural voyage. Over 20 glorious days you’ll enjoy Antarctica bathed in springtime; retrace Shackleton’s small boat voyage across the Scotia Sea and photograph in exquisite dawn light on the wildlife-packed beaches of South Georgia. Natural history experts and polar specialists share their knowledge, kayakers enjoy extended excursions, and everyone has time to contemplate our almost unbelievable surroundings.

Awarded Australian Geographic’s ‘Spirit of Adventure’ winner in 2009, Chris Bray continues to travel the world with his camera capturing photographs and video that have been published by the likes of National Geographic, both Australian and Canadian Geographic, TIME magazine and the Discovery Channel.

SOUTH GEORGIA & ANTARCTIC ODYSSEY

Summer comes to South Georgia’s remote, untamed landscape like a freight train. Famed for its abandoned whaling stations and Shackleton’s heroic journey, South Georgia is home to millions of fur seals and penguins, wallows of elephant seals, and nesting albatross. We arrive at the breeding cycle peak, as chicks become juveniles, parents shuttle fish and seal pups thrill with mock charges. Retracing Shackleton’s boat voyage, we visit Elephant Island before continuing south along the Antarctic Peninsula. Days remain long, and filled with humpback and minke whales, penguins and leopard seals, historic sites and scientific stations.

IN SHACKLETON’S FOOTSTEPS

Late summer offers the best chance to chart a course through the Weddell Sea’s shifting pack ice and vast tabular bergs, where Shackleton’s ship Endurance was trapped and crushed. We hope to explore fossil-rich islands, historic huts and set foot on the continent before retracing Shackleton’s heroic journey to save his men – first to Elephant Island, then on through waters where blue, sei and fin whales roam. South Georgia offers nesting albatross, mating elephant seals, the world’s largest king penguin rookeries and a visit to Shackleton’s grave.
